I bet you are wondering if you can take a trip back to your home country or go on an exotic international vacation during your authorized OPT period. The answer is yes! As long as you have a few important documents and have been maintaining status, you can travel and re-enter the country in F-1 status.

When planning your trip, you should keep in mind that you should not exceed 90 days of unemployment or be away from the US for more than 5 months.

Okay, now we’re ready to talk about the documents you will need to re-enter the US in F-1 status after your super fun trip:
1. First, you will need your valid OPT card. If you haven’t received your OPT card yet, you should not travel outside of the United States.
2. Next, you will need your OPT I-20 with a travel signature that has been issued within the last 6 months. You can request a travel signature from OIE using the link in the description.
3. Don’t forget your passport. It should have at least 6 months validity when you re-enter the US.
4. Of course you will need an F-1 visa that is valid on the day you return to the US. If your visa has already expired, you will need to apply for a new F-1 visa while you are out of the country.
5. Finally, you should have a letter from your employer stating that you are returning to “resume employment” at their company.

Make sure you carry these important documents in your carry-on bag so you can reach them quickly in the airport.

Oh! And the last thing to remember is to have fun on your trip and come back to us safely.
